Everyone loves Starbucks. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t have Starbucks at least in their top five coffee places. But what Starbucks lacks in comfort and low prices, The Stained Page makes up for.
Located at 115 Main St. in downtown Texarkana, The Stained page is a coffee shop bookstore. Owned by Don Slayter and his wife Lisa, they opened the whole-in-the-wall shop in 2023.
Personally, I’m in love with small businesses that are both good quality and cheap — not only does The Stained Page provide this, they give you even more. When you walk in, you are immediately hit with the bitter, yet warm, smell of fresh brewed coffee.
To the left is a stainless steel counter, pastry case, and aesthetic menu boards. There are floor to ceiling windows looking out at the street and a counter with bar stools along them. To the right are walls and rows filled with books of many genres — fiction, childrens, cook books, travel, Christian and many more. There are also many different types of seating with soft leather couches you can sink into, thick armchairs, and metal chairs at low tables.
The brick walls, exposed metal in the ceiling, and stainless steel kitchen add to the cozy, friendly atmosphere. Beyond the looks of the place, there are many other things to keep you entertained while you wait for your drinks such as chess and checkers boards, coloring books and boxes of crayons, and other fun little games.
Not only is The Stained Page inviting and comfortable, the people are incredibly welcoming. When I went up to the counter I explained that it was my first time visiting, and Don was immediately helpful. He explained the menu to me, showcased their seasonal drinks, and even recommended a few items. The people here were more than just employees. They were helpful, friendly, and made the experience feel like more than just grabbing a coffee.
Even more, the coffee could be compared to Starbucks. It’s sweet with just the right amount of coffee bitterness, and doesn’t taste like straight creamer. I didn’t get the chance to try any pastries but the experience was definitely enough to make me want to go back and try them.
I absolutely loved it here. It’s the perfect place to sit and study, clear your mind, find a good book, and hang out with your friends.
