Completed just in time for spring sports, the baseball/softball fields and track complex are the newest additions to the athletics program. The teams began using the fields for practice at the beginning of January.
The total project cost just over 11 million dollars, which included more parking space and a road connecting the fields to the back of the high school.
However, before the project could even begin, another costly job had to be completed.
“It took about two months to clear around 20 acres of trees,” Director of Operations Matt Fry said. “Construction didn’t fully begin until the summer of 2023.”
Not only is the new complex beneficial for baseball, softball, and track athletes, but it also allows for more practice space for teams such as the showstoppers and band members.
“The extra practice field with the track also gives space for multiple sports to practice at the same time,” Mr. Fry said. “Before, the only available practice space was the football stadium or the parking lot.”
Before the new complex, the teams had to travel to the run-down middle school fields to practice.
“The fields being at the high school allows students to access the fields without having to drive or get a ride over to the middle school,” Mr. Fry said. It’s a much safer option because everyone stays on campus.”
While a shorter commute is helpful, the best part about the field complex for senior Ty Boozer is the artificial turf.
“When we practiced on the old fields, we were constantly getting dirty from the grass,” Ty said. “Now when we dive, we don’t have to spend forever scrubbing stains out of our pants. We can just slide and get right back up.”
The first time the baseball team played in the new complex was a scrimmage at the end of January, but the first home game was on Feb. 7 against Redwater.
“Playing on the fields for the first time was honestly surreal. I was super thrilled to see everyone not only come out and see the new complex but also see the product we’re putting on the field,” Ty said. “I loved reintroducing PG baseball to everyone at the new place.”
