Watching the upcoming performance of “Cinderella” by the theater department may be surprising for some members of the audience – it’s not exactly the Disney movie that most people know. While the plot is basically the same, there are differences, theater director Lisa Newton said.
“It starts a little bit different, but all of the songs that people are familiar with are in there, just the storylines are a little bit different,” she said.
For starters, Cinderella has a stronger personality.
“The musical version is an updated version. I’m really excited because Cinderella is a much stronger female character,” Mrs.Newton said. “Cinderella is not a weak person waiting for the man to save her. She is powerful in her own right”
She also doesn’t act like she does in the movie.
“Cinderella is not necessarily meek and mild. In this version, she has a bit of backbone, and she stands up for herself,” Choreographer Mrs.Beck said.
For example, the famous scene with the glass slipper doesn’t happen the same way.
“Well, the big difference is that Cinderella, the first time she leaves the ball, she does not leave her shoe,” junior Emma Sharp said. “The second time she purposely leaves her shoe there for him [the prince] to find.”
The theater students shared the differences between the musical and the animated version, but the audience will understand and feel more clearly when the musical opens November 15-18.
