Sophomore Charly McNeil achieved what most teenagers would never even think of. Her small hobby of crocheting for her mom turned into a widespread business called Faithful Made Crochet. She makes all kinds of plushies, spending minutes to hours on each one for customers from all over the world.

“At first, I would crochet plushies for my mom and she would put them in her office,” Charly said. “She had coworkers ask where she got them and where they could get one themselves.”

Charly began getting more and more custom requests and eventually, she turned her popular talent into something bigger.

“I continued to get orders over time,” Charly said. “It kind of just grew into a business and what it is today.”

Charly’s brilliant idea to start selling her crocheted plushies made quite the profit. After a year and a half of running her online business through Etsy and a custom order form, Charly managed to make thousands.

“I’ve had three markets so far,” Charly said “Just from those markets, I would say I’ve made around $5,000, and that’s not including custom orders.”

However, raw talent isn’t the only thing that contributed to Charly’s success. She has spent roughly three years perfecting her craft, and it shows.

“I wouldn’t say crocheting is necessarily complicated but it takes a long time,” Charly said. “I once made a giant elephant and it took me an entire day to finish. It was definitely worth it though because it ended up being one of my favorite creations.”

The pattern for a plushie like that must be extensive, but Charly uses a variety of methods when it comes to choosing her patterns.

“I have designed some patterns of my own but I have also bought some patterns off of Etsy,” Charly said. “I also watch tutorials on YouTube and occasionally use free patterns on Instagram.”

Needless to say, the countless hours Charly spent wrapped in yarn have not gone to waste and she plans to continue to grow her work.

“I’ve had the business for maybe a year and a half now,” Charly said. “I’m now getting requests and orders from all around the world.”
