What is theatrical design?
“It is a UIL competition where you get placed in a category that Mrs.Beck chooses for you which consist of hair and makeup, set building, costume design, and marketing design.”
What specific category do you participate in?
“This year I am in hair and makeup, but last year I was in costume design. In hair and makeup, I select three models and come up with makeup looks on paper then execute them on models. I decide which ones look best on the models and on stage.”
What do you do during your class period and how do you brainstorm?
“So first what we do is read the script to get a base, then read again to pick apart details. We finish by making mood boards or Pinterest boards in order to deliver the best designs possible.”
What is the concept behind the designs and what do yall do with them?
“We come up with them as a group, but we all select them individually. Once students are assigned their job, we work together as a team and spend most of our time brainstorming ideas”
Can you do more than just design sets and costumes?
“You can technically do more than one, but it is very time consuming ⸺ most people say they want to do several but end up sticking to one.”
How do you like theatrical design and what are your favorite components?
“I love the family aspect. I know a lot of people say that about their extracurriculars, but it means more to us because of how small our group is. We all become very close very quickly because we all have similar interests and hobbies and can relate to one another.”
